Your Window Replacement Budget: Things to Keep in Mind

A poorly planned window replacement budget can lead to overspending, delays or even an unfinished project. Today, we discuss some important things to keep in mind when planning your window replacement budget.

No Two Projects Are the Same

Window replacement involves many variables like glass types and frame materials as well as how many windows you need to replace. With that in mind, it’s not an exaggeration when we say that no two window replacement projects are the same – which means no two budgets will be the same. It’s common practice for homeowners to find a ballpark price by asking friends and family who have had their windows replaced. Some would solicit a few free estimates from contractors. All of this is perfectly fine – however, you should manage your expectations by keeping in mind that your window replacement project will have a different price tag.

Cash Is Not the Only Option

Cash is still the best way to pay for home remodeling projects: it doesn’t require approvals nor incur interest. Plus, you’ll have no further obligations once the project is fully paid. However, it’s also the most difficult way to pay for a project because not everyone has ready cash, especially in emergency situations like replacing broken windows.

Fortunately, cash is not the only way to pay for your new windows. Credit cards are accepted by most, if not all, window replacement contractors. There are also loans like home equity loans (HEL), home equity line of credit (HELOC) and cash-out refinancing, which are ideal if you’d rather not use your credit card. Contractors may also offer financing or delayed payment programs.

Be Prepared for Emergencies

A good window replacement contractor can keep your project on track and within budget. Nevertheless, you should be prepared for unexpected expenses, such as unplanned repairs due to hidden problems like dry rot or insulation damage. The cost of repairs are not included in your window replacement estimate, so it only makes sense to have a separate budget for such emergencies, worth about 10% to 20% of the project cost.
