Tips on Sliding Door Maintenance

Many homeowners are choosing sliding doors because of their sleek design. Not only are they easy to use, but they also help save space since they operate without using hinges. Sliding doors also add a touch of modernity to your household.

To learn more about how to maintain your sliding doors, read this article from Renewal by Andersen® of Central Pennsylvania.

Lubricate the Roller Tracks

The two main issues you may face with your sliding doors’ roller tracks are rust and grime buildup, which can make the doors hard to open and close. Lubricate the tracks regularly to prevent rust. To get rid of grime, you can use a damp cloth to clean the tracks and rollers. When it comes to more stubborn dirt, try scrubbing with a toothbrush.

Rollers should be cleaned every six months. However, if you have sliding doors near your garden, you may need to clean the rollers more frequently as they may build up grime and dirt faster.

Adjust the Sliding Door Roller

You may want to adjust your sliding door height and check whether it glides better at a height that is lower or higher. To adjust, you will need to access the rollers of your sliding door. These rollers can be adjusted on either side of the sliding door to help it slide on tracks. They are usually hidden in plastic plugs, so you should look for two holes to access them. Once you find them, you can use a screwdriver to adjust the screw on the rollers.

Take Care of Sliding Glass Doors

Keep in mind that glass can easily break. Don’t push your sliding doors too hard as this can damage the tracks or the glass area. Additionally, you should clean the glass area at least once a week. Stains are harder to remove the longer they stay on the glass, so be sure to wipe off any dirty marks or spots as soon as possible.
