How To: Prevent Stinkbugs in PA

As if the falling temperatures and longer days weren’t tough enough, the onset of fall also marks the return of stink bugs for many residents in central PA. Stink bugs have become a big problem and buzz in PA is at an all time high.

Stink bugs are small, shield-shaped creatures that emit a foul odor as a means of self-defense. The bugs aren’t native to the U.S. and didn’t even arrive in the country until 1998 when they came over on shipping containers from traveling from Asia to Allentown, PA. Since then, the bugs have spread over most of the state and have became a widespread nuisance.

There are a few ways to lessen the chances that stink bugs enter your home, however. Some pesticides will do the trick, but stink bugs aren’t affected by the majority of chemical products so make sure you purchase something tailored to stink bugs.

Another more cost-effective option is just to make sure that all the cracks and gaps around your house are secured. Old window frames, cracks in the foundation or gaps in the attic are like giant welcome mats for stink bugs! Some other possible points of entry are window air conditioners and drafty doors.

It is best to do a thorough assessment of your home towards the end of summer before the stink bugs arrive. Once they have gained access to your home, it is much harder to get them to leave.

In short, the best way to prevent stink bugs is to keep up with the exterior maintenance of your home, especially towards the end of summer. If the bugs have managed to enter your home, look into purchasing a safe, specific pesticide or call a local exterminator. Another option is to use a vacuum cleaner to suck them up and then remove them from the home.
