This Spring, Upcycle Some Rebirth Into Your Furniture

Is that old trunk in the attic taking up space? What about that wooden wardrobe with the broken hinges?

This spring, breathe new life into seemingly useless household items by upcycling them into eye-catching creations. Transform that trunk into a flower planter or that wardrobe into a roomy bird cage. The options upcycling has to offer are endless. Give these a try or create a new upcycled dream.

Earthly Treasures

Every household seems to have one of those old storage trunks in the attic. It may have held papers and photographs at one time, but now it’s falling apart. Put those old papers and photos in a storage crate that will actually keep moisture out and turn the trunk into something both rustic and decorative: a flower planter.

Decide on a location for this upcycled planter and fill it with soil. Either prop the lid of the trunk open or remove it completely and decoratively lean it against the trunk. Then just plant the desired flowers or climbing vines and enjoy the view. Depending on the style, size and color of the trunk, a planter like this can spruce up that lackluster flowerbed or add an inventive flare to the front porch.

Classy Bird Condo

Give the family pets some room to stretch their wings and ditch the boring bird cage. Take the doors and drawers out of any unusable, yet sturdy, freestanding wooden wardrobe and turn it into a spacious bird paradise.

Remove the hinges and any drawer tracks from the wardrobe, leaving only the wooden frame. If preferred, cut additional viewing spaces into the frame’s top and sides and then sand down any sharp or splintered edges. Attach wire mesh to the inside of the wardrobe’s openings. Just be sure you make it easy to perform normal feeding and cleaning duties.

Add a variety of colorful toys, sitting posts and swings before introducing the birds to their new home. Not only will they enjoy the added space, but they’ll also feel at home in a natural, tree-based environment.
