Window Placement 101: Should All Your Windows Match?

Your windows play a critical role in many aspects of your home’s design. Aside from letting in natural light while protecting you and your family from the harshness of the elements, they also determine how your house looks from the outside. This is why it is extremely important that you put a lot of thought and planning into what kind of replacement windows to install.

The Basic Rules for Mixing and Matching Windows

If there’s one thing that you need to remember when shopping around for new windows, it’s this: the front doesn’t have to determine all the other sides. The windows that you pick out for the front of your house have to convey a sense of the home’s inhabitants while still being true to the existing architecture. For many homeowners, that means going for a symmetrical approach or opting for a more traditional style. But this doesn’t mean that you have to repeat the same pattern throughout your entire house.

One good rule is going for a consistent treatment with regards to the basic type, grille patterns, and trim. You should, however, avoid completely mismatched windows as this would create a disconnect that clearly looks off. For instance, a modern plate-glass window will definitely look out of place in an antique facade with symmetrical windows.

Another good thing to keep in mind is that what looks good on the outside may not work for what’s inside. Work with your contractor to make sure that you have windows that look beautiful when viewed from the outside while still maintaining functionality and aesthetics on the inside.
