Maximizing the Service Life of Your Windows

Windows take a lot of abuse, both from indoors and outdoors. They are constantly exposed to the elements on one side, while daily human use affects their performance on the other. All these things contribute to gradual wear and tear. Eventually, every window reaches the end of its life span and needs to be replaced.

One of the most frequent questions our experts at Renewal by Andersen of Central Pennsylvania get from clients is how they can maximize the lifespan of their windows. Here are our best tips to add a few more years of use to your windows.

Keep Them Clean

Windows are exposed to many different things that can quickly dirty up the glass. Regularly wipe down the panes with a soft cloth with a gentle glass cleaner. Wooden frames can be wiped with a moist cloth, but be careful about getting water on wood as this can cause premature rot. Vinyl and metal frames can be wiped clean in the same way.

Maintain the Seal

Your windows have a protective rubber seal that helps secure them in place and prevent air from coming in or going out. Regular use can wear out this seal, leading to heat loss and a spike in your energy consumption.

For older double-hung or casement windows, sometimes repairing or replacing this seal is enough to restore full functionality. You can use caulk or spray-foam insulation to seal gaps and breaks around the window and its frame.

Inspect Regularly

Your routine home maintenance chores should include your windows. A professional service should be able to properly diagnose problems and fix potentially costly ones before they become a major issue requiring replacement windows.

Protect your windows and keep them in excellent shape with regular inspections and maintenance from our specialists at Renewal by Andersen of Central Pennsylvania. Call us today at (717) 306-9448 for a free in-home consultation. We serve York, PA, and surrounding areas.
