4 Spring Maintenance Tips for Windows

Spring has arrived. With the warmer weather, now is a good time to check your home for any damage it might have sustained during the winter.

Start by making sure your windows are in optimal condition. Windows in good shape allow for a brighter home and a better view of the beautiful outdoors, while windows in disrepair can drag down your home’s curb appeal and comfort levels. In this post, your local home exterior contractor, Renewal by Andersen on Central Pennsylvania, shares some window maintenance tips.

1. Screens

After detaching the window screen, you can simply wash it with water in your shower or outside with a garden hose. Warmer water will make it easier to remove the built-up dirt and debris. Dry your screens using towels and allow them to air dry before putting them back in place.

2.  Glass

If you have removable sliding windows, you can avoid using a ladder to clean them. Windows that can’t be easily removed have to be cleaned from the outside.

3. Paint or Varnish

Wood windows should be checked for dirt and damage. During the cold season, your windows are more prone to condensation or frost that can collect at the bottom of the glass pane. This can cause wood damage, along with mildew and mold growth. These problems can be resolved by cleaning the surface with light sanding and adding a finish coat.

4. Window Cracks

Harsh weather may have hit your home and cracked your window glass. This is a big problem for double- or triple-paned windows because the argon gas in between each pane will leak. Without that gas, the windows lose their insulating capability.

Another issue is air moving freely in and out of your home even when your windows are closed. This will make it difficult to manage your indoor temperature and can cause a rise in your energy bills.

When it’s time to replace your damaged windows, you can rely on Renewal by Andersen of Central Pennsylvania. We are your leading provider of energy-efficient casement windows. These windows can be opened wide, allowing you to enjoy the breeze and the blooms of spring.
