How to Choose the Right Window Size for Your Home

You’re free to make your new windows as large or small as you want. But if you want to get the most of what they can offer, you’ll need to decide on just the right size. Here are some tips:

  • Consider local building codes. Before picking new windows, check with the folks at your local building department. There may be requirements that limit the window size you’re able to choose. This is especially true for certain areas of your home, such as the bedroom, bathroom and basement. To ensure the windows in these spaces can provide sufficient ventilation or be used to safely and quickly exit the home in times of emergency, local building codes may set window size at a particular height and width.
  • Don’t forget about privacy. You might want to reconsider choosing a large window for your bathroom. Unless your property has enough foliage to shield you from view, or unless the homes in your neighborhood aren’t placed close together, you should go for small windows.
  • Take viewing area and access to natural light into account. Correct window sizing is also important if you want to incorporate daylighting more effectively into your home design. You should pick larger windows in rooms that face north or south to better illuminate them during daytime. In spaces that face east or west, go for smaller windows to avoid the sun’s glare and excess heat. If one of your rooms has a magnificent view, go for larger windows to frame it to best effect. But if it’s just overlooking the street or the side of your neighbor’s home, you can get away with picking something smaller.
