Single- and double-hung windows remain two of the most popular options of replacement windows being offered to homeowners today. They look the same at first glance, but they differ in many ways, allowing you to choose one over the other. Here’s a look at their differences.
A single-hung window, sometimes called a single-sash window, is typically designed with a lower, operable sash and an upper, fixed sash. In other words, only the bottom part of the window slides up and down, allowing you to ventilate your home as necessary.
On the other hand, double-hung or double-sash windows have two sashes that slide up and down. Both the top and bottom sash can provide more effective ventilation as they allow the window to let in cool, fresh air through the bottom sash while the rising hot air escapes through the top sash. This provides increased comfort which makes them popular replacement windows in most two-story homes.
Both choices provide efficient ventilation, but in terms of ease of maintenance, double-hung windows have a distinct advantage over their single-hung counterparts. Cleaning the exterior side of the upper (fixed) sash can be tough, especially from the inside. Doing so from the outside is possible, but the difficulty increases when trying to clean single-hung windows on the upper floors of your home.
This won’t be a problem with double-hung windows, especially those from Renewal by Andersen® of Central Pennsylvania. They have tilt-in sashes, which allows you to clean both sides of the windows without having to go outside or climbing the ladder. The ease of maintenance is such that they don’t require special cleaning products to keep them in great condition.
