Time is running out on energy rebate

Today is the first day of fall which (sadly) means winter isn’t too far away. This is an ideal time to replace drafty windows and doors before the cold air comes around.

The good news for home owners is that there is still a little bit of time left for the federal tax credits for consumer energy efficiency, which expire on December 31, 2010.

The credits were enacted in last year by the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009 and offer consumers a 30 percent tax credit on qualifying energy efficient purchases.

For replacement windows and doors, here’s a quick overview of the main qualifications:

Tax Credit: 30% of cost up to $1,500
Expires:
December 31, 2010
Details:
Must be an existing home & your principal residence. New construction and rentals do not qualify.

Lots of other purchases like roofs, geothermal heat pumps, insulation and HVAC can be rebated as well.

The Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Energy provides more resources for homeowners to find credits and rebates on the state level.

With all of the rebates and offers out there now, there has never been a better time to explore making your home more energy efficient. The right purchase can pay for itself in energy savings.
