Need a New Door? Saw Down Your Choices With These Options

The front door is often a home’s first impression. But if it’s looking a little worse for wear these days, it might be time to give it an upgrade and amp up its curb appeal. There are several popular materials and styles to choose from for exterior doors.

A Classic Style

A heavy wooden door is a classic look for any home. Whether it’s a craftsman style door with tall wooden panels, a traditional look with decorative glass or something with ironwork to evoke old-world charm, wooden doors will never go out of style.

Wooden doors are available in a variety of stains and with endless hardware options. But the beauty of a wooden door is that they’re made to last. These doors can be sanded and painted years down the road for a quick and easy weekend update.

Easy Upkeep

For individuals who worry about maintenance and want a door with little to no upkeep, a steel or fiberglass door might be the perfect choice. Many companies offer several options that come with or without windows and vary the number of panels for a unique look.

These doors also come in a variety of colors to match a home’s existing shutters or trim. And homeowners can even mimic the style of a traditional wooden door for a fraction of the cost. Steel and fiberglass doors are also extremely energy efficient and protect against excess moisture.

Let the Light In

For more modern homes, a patio door might be the best choice. Available in wood, steel and fiberglass, patio doors are primarily glass. Add blinds to the inside for privacy, or spring for doors that have shades between the glass panels.

Depending on the space in your entryway, there are a number of available configurations. It’s possible to choose to have both doors swing open, keep one door fixed or opt for a sliding door. No matter which style of patio door, make sure the windows are energy efficient to minimize the hit on your utility bill.
