These Are the Worst Ways Winter Affects Your Patio Doors

Freezing temperatures and snowy weather can make winter a challenging season for entry and patio doors. Renewal by Andersen® doors are designed to protect you and your home against the harshness of winter, but this doesn’t mean it’s 100% immune to common problems caused by the low temperatures.

It helps to familiarize yourself with the most prevalent issues that affect your doors during this cold season so you can take steps to minimize their effects and ensure that your door lasts longer. Here are some ways our experts at Renewal by Andersen® of Central Pennsylvania have seen winter do to different patio doors.

Thermal Contractions

Much like how materials expand during hot days, doors can also contract during cold days. Whatever style of patio door you have, whether you have sliding contemporary doors with large glass areas, or a French doors with gridded muntins, your door can fall victim to thermal size changes. You can minimize this by replacing any rusted screws. You can also talk to your installer to replace these screws with ones that are slightly larger to compensate for the contraction of your doors.

Strike Plate Alignment

Size changes can lead to a number of related issues as well. The alignment of the strike plate is a common one that is perhaps the most frustrating. This can cause your door to not close properly, which is of course as much an energy efficiency risk as it is a security risk. Thankfully, you can adjust the strike plate quite easily to make sure it’s perfectly aligned with the door.

Fading Colors

Of course, fluctuations in temperature can also cause paint colors to fade. If you have hinged French doors, this can be particularly unsightly. Renewal by Andersen patio doors are designed not to lose their color no matter what season it is.
