How to Address Winter-Related Door Problems

Cold outdoor temperatures can take a toll on your doors. Today, Renewal by Andersen® of Central Pennsylvania, a leading provider of replacement windows and doors, shares some of the common door problems you may encounter during the winter season:

Weatherstripping Issues

Weatherstripping is installed to block drafts and reduce potential air leaks. If you feel a draft around your windows or doors, it could be because the weatherstripping was installed improperly or it has worn out. These drafts will put an extra burden on your HVAC system to heat your home. That means more energy consumption which leads to higher monthly utility bills. Now is a good time to check the quality of your weatherstripping and have it replaced if you notice any problems.

Faded Entry Doors

Winter weather can also affect your entry door’s appearance. Depending on the material the door is made from, it can slowly fade and lose its original color due to the winter moisture. Wood doors are more susceptible to this issue, especially if they’re not applied with the proper treatment (i.e., varnishes, stains, finishes, etc.).

Wood doors can be tedious to maintain, especially during the winter season. As local experts in maintaining doors and windows, we suggest investing in a material that’s more durable and won’t fade. Fiberglass and Fibrex® are some of the best door materials when it comes to standing up to winter weather. They have high moisture resistance and won’t easily warp even when exposed to extreme temperatures.

Loose Screws

Some of the screws in your doors could come loose during the winter season due to the extreme temperature and humidity shifts. This can make your door sag and rub against the frame or not fit snugly at all. Re-tightening all your door’s screws should be your first course of action to deal with this issue, but for a long-term solution, we recommend replacing the existing screws with those of a larger diameter.
