Window Treatment Ideas for Wide Windows

Image: PoshSurfside.com

Those big, beautiful, light-filled windows seemed like a great idea when you first saw them, right? But once the plans became daily practice, you suddenly began noticing that something is missing — and you could definitely use more privacy or at least eliminate that early morning view of Mr. Manero doing yoga in the buff.

Try these terrific window-enhancing treatments to get the most beauty and functionality out of your home possible.

Rolling Blinds

When you saw the word “rolling blinds” did you conjure up an image of those cranky plastic monstrosities that look like they belong in your bedroom, circa 1978? Then do yourself a favor and spend some time checking out the wide variety of roller blind options available, especially if your home’s décor features simple lines or a modern vibe. Plastic, by the way, is a thing of the past; today’s blinds feature elegant textures that suit a range of styles.

Try light-filtering roller blinds, which maintain enviable brightness and also provide privacy. They’re also custom-sizable, meaning they will fit even the largest windows. For a twist, consider hanging them halfway down the window — an ideal choice for when the treetops are lovely but the parking lot below isn’t.

Sliding Panels

Homes featuring large floor-to-ceiling windows could probably use elegant and trendy sliding panels. Can’t conjure a visual? Think Japanese tea house, sushi on a low table… your dining companion enters, sliding a bamboo screen aside quietly … aha! Bingo. Sliding panels.

Sliding panels are perfect for those times when privacy and light filtration capability are musts but you still want to enjoy the overall effects of a large window. And like rolling blinds, they are also customizable.

Traditional Styles

Not every large window lives in a home with a streamlined, modern décor. Fortunately, there are as many choices for traditional homes as there are for contemporary ones. Balloon valances, roman shades, café rods, long panels and more offer the homeowner a variety of window treatment options. Unfortunately, the number of options available makes choosing a look nearly overwhelming.

Before you hire a professional, try purchasing home décor magazines that are likely to feature homes with large windows; appropriate choices include Architectural Digest, Martha Stewart Living and Better Homes and Gardens. Even if the ideas in the magazines are beyond your budget, it’s a terrific place to start.
