How to Accessorize Your Space With Metallics

Metallic accessories have the potential to subtly reinvent any home or office. Their mirror-like properties catch natural light and redirect it into the space around them, brightening the look of any room. To successfully incorporate metallic highlights with a room’s décor, follow the three rules below.

Use Natural Light to Accent Your Accessories

Bathe metal accessories in natural light by aligning them with a room’s windows. Sunlight will enhance their metallic sheen and make the room’s style really pop.

If the room has many large windows, one metallic accessory may be enough to accent the amount of natural light in the space; however, if medium or small windows are the only sources of natural light, strategically placing several small metallic accessories around the space will allow sunlight to bounce from one metallic object to another.

Less Is More

Metallic accents may look overbearing if there are too many of them in one space. The size of the room should be taken into consideration when determining how much is just enough.

For small- and medium-size rooms, sticking with two or three metallic accents is a safe bet. Keeping the number of such accessories low will ensure the metallic accents look stylish but not overbearing.

For larger rooms, five or six metallic accessories are acceptable. Be sure to position these accessories throughout the entire room so the focal points of the space aren’t limited to a single area, which can actually make the room look smaller. If, however, making the room look smaller is the desired effect, using metallics to accent a single area is a good strategy.

All the Colors of the Rainbow … Won’t Look Good

Carefully consider the color scheme of the space being accented. Stick to metallic accessories that either match or are color opposites of the room’s décor.

For example, if the space is primarily dominated by wooden furniture and earth tones, consider accenting the space with classic bronze or copper accessories. On the other hand, if the space is decorated in shades of blue, adding some modern orange metallics will do a lot to liven up the space.
